Novelista y humorista inglés. Sterne fue clérigo en York durante muchos años antes de que salieran a relucir sus talentos en una sátira que escribió al estilo de Swift para apoyar a su deán en un pleito eclesiástico. Dejó sus parroquias bajo la tutela de un cura, y se tomó el tiempo para escribir Vida y opiniones del caballero Tristram Shandy (1759–67), una novela experimental publicada en nueve partes y en la cual la historia queda en segundo plano ante las asociaciones libres y las abundantes digresiones del narrador. Es considerada una de las más importantes precursoras de la novela psicológica y de la técnica narrativa flujo de conciencia. Después de padecer por largo tiempo de tuberculosis, Sterne huyó del húmedo aire de Inglaterra, y dio inicio a los viajes que inspiraron para escribir Viaje sentimental por Francia e Italia (1768), una novela cómica que desafía las expectativas convencionales del lector ante un libro de viajes.
